News, tips, and useful information for residents of MVT
Periodically check the five stop valves in your apartment for leaks and ease of turning. There are two under the kitchen sink, two under the bathroom sink, and one for the toilet tank. If a valve is difficult to turn, leaks, or does not turn off completely, the valve should be replaced. Valve replacement requires a water shutdown to be scheduled in advance with our office.
When leaving your apartment for an extended time, turn off each of the five stop valves in your apartment. This will minimize the possibility of a leak occurring while no one is there to notice.
There has been a recurring problem with a particular brand of float valve for the toilet tank. This valve has shown a higher rate of failure compared to other brands, in some cases causing extensive damage to apartments. Contact our office for more information.
We recommend the use of licensed contractors for repairs or remodeling in your apartment.
Residents can check cable television channel 2 for up to date information on what's happening at MVT. Our electronic bulletin board also has ads regarding real estate, rentals, items for sale, and more. If you would like to place an ad on our electronic bulletin board, contact the manager's office.
Hurricane season is June 1st through November 30th. Don't wait until a hurricane watch is issued. Make your preparations now. Here is what you should do:
Listen to your radio or TV for storm updates and instructions.
Keep the following on hand:
Portable radio
Extra batteries.
Flash light and candles.
Manual can opener.
Matches or lighter.
First aid kit and special medications.
Five day supply of non-perishable food.
Ice chest and blue ice packs.
Containers of water.
Masking tape for windows.
Bring all potted plants into the apartment.
Remove furniture/items from apartment entrance ways and lanais.
Keep your drapes closed.
Stay indoors during high winds. Again, be prepared.
In the event of a power failure, MVT has an emergency backup generator which supplies power to the common areas such as exterior lighting, water pumps, and elevators. The generator does not supply power to the apartments.
Plug all heat generating devices directly into wall outlets.
Don't yank on electrical cords.
Don't hang cords over nails, pipes, or with tacks.
Use only the correct type of breaker switches in your circuit box.
Discard frayed wiring.
Use listed appliances. Make sure your electrical appliances and cords bear the seal of the Underwriter's Laboratories (UL). Keep small appliances unplugged when not in use. Never yank on electrical cords.
Do not overload circuits or sockets. Never use more than one high-wattage appliance on a circuit at a time. Use surge protection outlet bars meeting UL 1449 2nd Edition on sensitive electronic equipment, and check to make sure the device indicates it will not conduct electricity when it has failed.
Ventilate electronic equipment. Make sure there is ample air circulation around TVs, VCRs, and stereos, computers, especially if they are grouped near one another. Keep electronic equipment clear of accumulated lint that might decrease ventilation and add potential fuel for ignition.
Do not hide extension cords. Extension cords should be in good condition and out in the open rather than under rugs, over hooks, or through door openings and partitions. Keep kinks out and use a heavy-duty cord rated for the electrical load being used. Cords are not meant to replace permanent wiring.

We need your help to curb possible water waste on our property. Below are some tips to help conserve, as suggested by the Board of Water Supply.
Kitchen
Use full dishwasher loads instead of small partial loads before washing
If washing dishes by hand, use a bowl of soapy water to scrub first, then rinse all at once, rather than letting the faucet run
Wash vegetables in a bowl of water instead of under a running tap
Keep a bottle of chilled water in the refrigerator
Steam vegetables, instead of boiling them
Install water-saving devices in faucets
Check for leaks in plumbing
Bathroom
Install water-saving toilet fixtures, including toilet dams, low-flush toilet tanks, or dual flush devices
Don't use the toilet as a waste-basket; it's the biggest water-user in the house
Take 5-minute showers instead of tub baths
When brushing teeth, use a glass of water to rinse, instead of letting the faucet run
Install flow-restrictors or other water-saving devices for the shower and faucets
Check for leaks in plumbing
Laundry
Wash full loads instead of partial loads to conserve water
Soak badly stained clothing in a pail of water overnight, to improve cleaning
